The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct. — Carl Jung I find the above famous quote by philosopher Carl Jung to be so true. The beginning of the Garden Series all started for me with doodling during the pandemic. Things were so intense and I was too edgy to work on “real” paintings. Yet I needed to do something, so I started covering some old canvases and wood panels with random shapes and colors from a limited palette that I had out. A year later, I pulled those scribbles and swirls back out and soon they evolved into these garden paintings. It was a real revelation for me. I know that when I am overly cautious about what I am doing, I often freeze up. Now I am a bit more adventurous and experiment when I paint, even to a point of making a mess and starting over, in other words, I dare to play. Something might come out of the messing around, or nothing at all, but what’s important is to feel free and just play. What emerges out of play can sometimes be a wonderful surprise.” — Minh |
