Meet May/June 2024 Featured artist Larry Lawlor

​​Lawrence Lawlor found stone carving about 10 years ago. Before that he worked as a 2D artist, a theater designer, contractor, teacher, art director, and craftsperson in wood and wax. Of all these artistic worlds, delving into what can be found in a hunk of stone, to be allowed to discover what is possible and finding it tops them all.

“I am an elder now with a long history of artistic and more practical endeavors.
My life includes an advanced degree in theater design, marriage, 5 wonderful kids and 6 amazing grand kids. I wrote this piece after discovering stone as a medium and it speaks about who I am now.”
 
“State of Being
There is a state of being that I love.
It is only after the fact that
I recognize I have been experiencing it.
It happened to me yesterday while
carving a piece of warm colored limestone
and a vague feeling I wanted it to convey.
There is a rhythm of hammer to chisel to stone,
of breath and heartbeat.
There is a singular path of the many choices driving the carving.
There is stillness of the monkey mind,
of all other stimulus,
or, the sense of time.
For me, this state is at the core of artistic expression,
driven by the need to create,
to transform,
to speak.”
