Meet August Featured Artist Cynthia Faw

8/1/2024

Picture
Cynthia Faw is a Pacific Northwest artist who works in watercolor, oil and pastels.  Her representational paintings evoke quiet interactions with the world around us, embracing seascapes, landscapes and peaceful urban idylls.  She devotes her art to celebrating the essential quietude that can be found outdoors.

Cynthia received her training in fine arts and architecture at the University of Illinois.  Following her retirement from full-time architectural practice, she has studied independently with master painters, further honing her skills as an artist.  She is a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Puget Sound Group Northwest Artists and the Mt. Si Artist Guild.  She won an honorable mention in the 2024 Small Works Show at the Art Gallery of SnoValley, and has been featured in two one-woman shows in Seattle, WA.  Her work has been published in DESTIG magazine and her paintings can be found in many private collections.

Cynthia paints and sails in Seattle, WA and Honolulu, Hawaii.

Picture
A Line and a Pole Watercolor on paper, 12”x16” My good friend Beth at 3-1/2 years of age, fishing from her family’s lake camp dock. Even though her pole is just a broomstick with a string attached, she couldn’t be happier anticipating a good catch. I loved the old-fashioned 1950’s life jacket, paired with her favorite summer dress.
Picture
Vung Tau Dreaming Oil on canvas board, 10”x8” A shaggy pup escapes the heat of the day in the shade of the seaside lighthouse at Vung Tau-Ba Ria, Vietnam. Though half a world away from my San Juan cat, the lighthouse’s entry door shutters seemed to make a good pairing with it, so I envisioned these paintings as companions.

El Gato Pasa Oil on canvas board, 10”x8” A small cat with a big attitude strolls along a rain-slicked sidewalk in Old San Juan. The bright yellow stuccoed wall seemed to brighten the dreary, quiet day, and I thought it really set off the cat!
